ROCHESTER, NY – The Oberlin College field hockey team got their season started on the road against Nazareth on Saturday afternoon. The Yeowomen got off to a hot start behind a goal from newcomer
Mary Rodman in the first quarter but were ultimately overpowered by the Golden Flyers, 6-1.
Veteran keeper,
Janny McCormick earned the start in cage for the Crimson and Gold. Playing a full 60 minutes, McCormick collected six stops in the match.
Elly Scheer tallied a defensive save in the final minutes of action, marking her first of the year.
The offense was led by Rodman, with the first goal of the season coming off a pass from
Clare Kammeier.
Bella Tilford also provided strength to the offense, taking the team's only other shot.
After McCormick tallied a trio of saves in the early minutes of the contest, the Crimson and Gold moved the ball downfield, where they managed to settle on offense. Working the defense, Kammeier connected with Rodman in front of the goal who tapped the ball in for the 1-0 lead.
It was all Nazareth in the second quarter, knocking down five goals to neutralize Oberlin's efforts. The Yeowomen conceded just once more in the final minutes of the game, giving way to a 6-1 loss.
The young squad stays on the road for their next match on Friday, September 6, when they head to Richmond, IN, for a pair of neutral games. Oberlin first plays Maryville at 1 p.m. on Friday, then Wilson on Saturday at 2 p.m.
