GAMBIER, OH- Traveling south to take on their biggest rival, the Oberlin College men's lacrosse team dropped a 14-8 match to the Kenyon Owls. Evening their conference record to 2-2 with the loss, the Yeomen move to 8-4 overall.
Â
First-year
Christian Tacogue guided the Crimson and Gold offense behind four goals.
Solomon Brennan finished with two goals and one assist, while
Ryan Blasberg and
Sam Ryu also tallied a goal in the game.
Â
Defensively,
Jonas Taylor-Lillquist brought in a trio of ground balls and caused turnovers, leading a defense that saw seven players record at least one ground ball and one caused turnover.
Â
Kenyon opened the game with three-straight goals before the Yeomen could get on the board, finally scoring after
Jacob Starcke found Blasberg on a man-up opportunity. The Owls scored one more, but Oberlin scored last after Brennan drove down the middle for a goal at the :18 mark.
Â
Down 4-2 to start the second quarter, the Yeomen gave up another pair of goals to the Owls before Tacogue notched his first of the game at the 5:57 mark. Oberlin slung a plethora of shots against Kenyon, but were unable to capitalize on any of their looks and headed into the halftime break down three goals.
Â
The Owls extended their advantage to four in the opening minute, but the Yeomen balanced their attack and mounted a mini comeback midway through the quarter. Ryu scored first on a man-up opportunity, before Brennan added another on the back of yet another power play. Tacogue cut the lead to one after
Alexander L'Hommedieu scooped a ground to help Oberlin transition to offense.
Â
Behind the Owls 7-6, Oberlin looked to score the equalizer off the face-off, but Kenyon rallied in the final minutes for a trio of points to regain their four-goal lead. Outmatched in the quarter of action, the Yeomen had too large a gap to close against Kenyon, and ultimately fell 14-8. The Crimson and Gold saw a few bright spots in that last quarter, namely the
Peyton Lee-Tacogue connection, which matched up for two goals in the closing minutes of the game.
Â
The Yeomen stay on the road for their next contest, taking on Wooster this Saturday, April 13, at 3 p.m.
