Wooster, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's lacrosse team fell to the College of Wooster Fighting Scots, 17-11, on Saturday afternoon at John P. Papp Stadium.
Oberlin was led by
Solomon Brennan's six-point performance as he scored four times and dished out two assists. First-year
Christian Tacogue also deposited four goals to accompany one assist en route to posting five points.
After the Scots jumped ahead 2-0, The Yeomen would get on the board courtesy of Brennan's first of two first-quarter goals as he finished off a feed from
Jack Duffy. After Brennan assisted on
Jacob Starcke's score to cut the deficit to one, Brennan found the back of the cage once more, evening the affair at 3-3 just over 12 minutes into the game.
However, it would all unravel for the Yeomen from there as the Scots cashed in three more goals over the final 2:06 of the opening frame before scoring five straight times to kick off the second session to swell their lead out to 11-3. Oberlin would score in the closing seconds of the first half as Starcke sent in a pass from Tacogue to cut the Scots' cushion down to seven at the intermission.
The second half was much more closely contested but unfortunately, the eight-goal Wooster barrage in the middle part of the game was too much for the Yeomen to overcome.
Both teams would score four times in the third quarter with Brennan and Tacogue each netting two goals in the period.
Oberlin trailed 15-8 going into the final frame and back-to-back Tacogue goals put a little pressure on the Scots as their lead dipped down to five with 9:31 left to play, but the Yeomen would get no closer the rest of the way.
First-year
Donsou Lee led the defense with a career-high eight ground balls, while junior
Gavin Girard caused three turnovers to lead the team.
Trevor Flynn went 7-of-16 at the face-off X and corralled five ground balls to run his season account to 102.
Jake Pillsbury went the distance between the pipes and made 13 saves, marking his fifth straight game with double-digit stops and seventh time of the season.
Wooster out-shot Oberlin 54-34, which included a 30-19 differential in shots on goal. OC struggled with possession, committing 24 turnovers while going just 16-of-26 on clears.
The loss dropped the Yeomen back to 8-5 overall and 2-3 in the NCAC, while Wooster moved to 10-3 and 4-0 in league play.
Oberlin returns home to host Denison University on Wednesday afternoon at 5 p.m.
