Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Yeomen Falter Against Little Giants

By James Foster '26

CRAWFORDSVILLE, IN- In their second match in as many days, the Oberlin College men's tennis team suffered another close loss to a conference rival.

After five hours of matchplay, the Yeomen lost to the Wabash College Little Giants 5-4. Just like their match the day before, the Yeomen fell into a 2-1 hole after doubles play that they could not crawl out of. Third-year Sebastien Naginski and second-year Shawn Lisann lost the last two games of their match on deuce points to Wabash's #1 doubles team, comprised of Augusto Ghidini and Cole Shifferly, to lose 8-6. Oberlin's #2 doubles team, fourth-year Rohan Gold and first-year Zain Makada, kept their winning ways going, taking down Cole Borden and Ethan Koeneman 8-5. Second-year James Foster and first-year Ben Tichauer lost 8-4 in the #3 doubles match to Tharakesh Ashokar and Rafael Rin.

In his #1 singles match, Gold found himself in another three-set battle. After taking the first set 6-2 to Shifferly, and breaking back to even the second set at 3-3, the Yeoman couldn't hold on and lost it 6-3. After a back and forth third set that saw both players come up with incredible shots on important points, Gold ultimately lost 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Lisann got off to a rocky start in his #2 singles match against one of his doubles opponents. After getting broken at deuce to start the match, the second-year upped his level when he was down 4-2. After a crucial hold, Lisann hit some great passing shots to break Ghidini's serve for the first time to get the momentum back on his side. Some clean ball striking from Lisann and a few tight points from Ghidini earned the second-year the first set, 6-4. The Yeoman breezed through the second set, dropping just one game to close out the match 6-4, 6-1.

Naginski's forehand and passing shots were on point in his #3 singles match against Borden. After getting broken to start the match, Naginski cruised through the rest of his match, winning 6-2, 6-2.

Makada got off to a slow start and, despite his best efforts, wasn't able to turn the match around. Ashokar's well-placed serve and powerful groundstrokes were too much for the first-year to handle in the #4 singles match, as the Little Giant won 6-2, 6-2.

Tichauer had arguably the most thrilling match of the day, coming back from losing nine of the first ten games. Facing a 1-6, 0-3 hole, the first-year began to find his rhythm and chip away at Rin's lead. Down 6-1, 5-3, Tichauer saved three match points in a row and went on a tear, winning the next three games to even the match at one set a piece. The Yeoman saved numerous break points in the third set and held his nerve to win the #5 singles match, 1-6, 7-5, 6-4.

In the #6 singles match, Foster was broken at deuce in his first service game and couldn't capitalize on a few opportunities in the first set against Vittorio Bona, dropping the set 6-3. After going down another early break in the second set, the Yeoman started serving and playing much better and led 4-3. However, a few crucial mistakes cost him the match, losing 6-3, 6-4.

After this weekend, the team drops to 5-8 on the season and 0-2 in conference.

The Yeomen return to action when they travel to take on the College of Wooster Fighting Scots this Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
