Oberlin, Ohio - The Oberlin College men's lacrosse team honored its six senior members pregame and then went on to reward them with a commanding 19-7 victory over the visiting Wabash College Little Giants on Saturday afternoon at the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex.
Yeomen seniors
Aidan Loh,
John McDonnell,
Leander Herman,
Christian Pfennig,
Ryan Blasberg, and
Alex Thompson were honored before the opening face-off and all played a factor in the victory except the injured Loh. Herman finished with two goals, while Blasberg posted seven points on four goals and three assists. McDonnell had a face-off win and a ground ball, and Pfenning picked up two ground balls and caused a turnover, while Thompson played locked-down defense at the top.
First-year
Christian Tacogue matched Blasberg with a team-high four goals to accompany two assists and junior
Sam Ryu also netted a hat a trick in the victory.
Oberlin controlled the game from the onset but Wabash stayed within striking distance for the bulk of the first half. First-year
Sean Obana, who scored twice in the game, opened the scoring with a man-up finish off a
Jack Duffy feed. Defenseman
Jonas Taylor-Lillquist followed with a coast-to-coast goal to make it a 2-0 OC advantage six minutes into the game.
The Yeomen would get two more first-quarter goals from Tacogue and Ryu to claim a 4-2 cushion after 15 minutes of play. The lead was down to one in the early portion of the second quarter but Oberlin would score the other four goals of the session to carry a 7-3 advantage into the intermission.
Oberlin's offensive barrage rolled into the third quarter as Blasberg scored three times with a Tacogue tally mixed in to balloon the lead out to 11-3. The Yeomen would score four more times in the period to leave no doubt in the eventual outcome.
The fourth quarter featured the first-career goal for freshman
Andrew Rosa and first goal of the season for junior
Aidan Johnston.
Trevor Flynn went 16-of-19 at the face-off X and scooped up 11 ground balls in the win while
Joe Barocas went the distance between the pipes, making 13 saves.
Oberlin will close out the 2024 season next Saturday at DePauw University. The opening face-off is set for 1 p.m.
