Wooster, Ohio - The Oberlin College men's tennis team is still in search of its first North Coast Athletic Conference victory of the season after dropping a 5-4 decision at the College of Wooster.
The Yeomen and Scots went swing-for-swing for nearly five hours but Oberlin ultimately ended on the wrong end of the result, marking its third 5-4 loss in the NCAC this season.Â
All three doubles battles needed extra time to determine a winner with the Yeomen winning in the top two flights. The No. 1 duo of
Shawn Lisann and
Sebastien Naginski eked out an 8-7 (7-4) win over Jay Dixit and Namit Misra. The number two tandem of
Rohan Gold and
Zain Makada also edged Shivam Dewan and Arnav Yadav 8-7 (7-4), but the Yeomen failed to complete the sweep as
James Foster and
Ben Tichauer were nipped 8-7 (7-0) by Alex Anikeeff and Anthony VanOyen.
The top three singles battles all went the distance to determine a winner but, unfortunately, they went in favor of the Scots.Â
After a first-set tug-of-war, Dixit got by Gold 7-6 (7-5) but the Oberlin ace followed with a 6-0 blanking before succumbing to a 7-5 setback in the decisive third set.Â
Lisann was 6-4 victor in the opening stanza over VanOyen but he would rebuttal by taking down the Yeomen sophomore by matching 6-3 counts in the next two sets.Â
Naginski dropped his opening session against Yadav, 7-5, before bouncing back with a 6-2 triumph in the second. However, his grinder would eventually end in a heartbreaking 7-6 (8-6) tiebreaker.Â
Tichauer was upended 7-6 (7-3) in his opening set against Dewan before falling 6-0 in the second to secure the win for the Scots, but the Yeomen prevailed in the final two singles bouts.Â
After dropping the first set to Misra, Makada answered back with 6-3, 10-6 victories in the fifth flight and
James Foster took down Bennett Dickerson 6-2, 6-3, in the sixth position.
The Yeomen return home to host Wittenberg University on Saturday afternoon.Â
