Elmhurst, IL - The Oberlin College men's lacrosse team suffered a 15-10 defeat at the hands of Elmhurst College on Saturday afternoon.
The Blue Jays scored early and often and the Yeomen couldn't keep pace as they took their second loss of the season, falling back to 3-2.
Senior
Ryan Blasberg led the way with five points on three goals and two assists.
Sam Ryu found the back of the cage twice and dished out an assist, while
Jacob Starcke also posted a pair of goals in the setback.
The Yeomen got off to a slow start as the Blue Jays scored three times within the first five minutes of the game and led 4-0 before the Yeomen finally got on the board courtesy of a Starcke goal off an
Asher Friedman assist.
After Elmhurst deposited the first two goals of the second quarter, Starcke struck again with the help of a Blasberg feed that trimmed the gap down to 6-2 at the midway point of the session. Unfortunately, the Blue Jays would score three of the final four goals of the half to carry a 9-3 advantage into the intermission. The other Yeomen score in the period came from
Solomon Brennan off a
Colin Taylor pass.
The two foes would alternate four goals to open up the third quarter but a string of three straight Blue Jay deposits swelled their lead out to 14-5. Oberlin would post the final two tallies of the frame to cut the deficit in half as
Jack Duffy and Ryu would each send one in.
With the outcome never in doubt, Elmhurst took its foot off the gas somewhat in the fourth quarter, scoring just one goal. Oberlin would score three times in the frame to put some window dressing on the final scoreline. Ryu finished off a man-up opportunity to open the quarter and Freidman and Blasberg would also add tallies in the period.
The 15 goals conceded by the Yeomen marks the largest total they have surrendered this year. OC also struggled with its possession, winning just 10 of the game's 28 face-offs while losing the ground ball battle 28-11.
Oberlin returns to action with a midweek match-up at St. Vincent College Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m.
