Men’s Basketball Stumbles at Wooster

Oberlin, Ohio - The Oberlin College men's basketball team got off to a quick start but could not sustain it as the College of Wooster Fighting Scots cruised by the Yeomen, 97-69, on Wednesday night at Timken University.

First-year JJ Gray led the Yeomen with 19 points on an efficient 8-of-11 shooting and Milun Micanovic added 11 tallies in the loss on a 4-of-5 showing from the floor. Zach Smith chipped in nine points, while rookie Finn Horsfall made his fourth appearance of the season and netted seven points.

Gray's triple-hit at the 12:40 mark of the opening half gave the Yeomen a 13-7 advantage but it would all unravel from there as Oberlin would go ice cold offensively while the Scots proceeded to rip off a 21-2 run over the next six minutes of action to grab a 28-15 lead. The lone Oberlin bucket during the barrage came from Micanovic at the 9:07 mark. Wooster, which missed five of its first six shots in the early going, didn't miss much after that en route to carrying a 49-30 lead into the intermission.

Oberlin went into the night short-handed without the services of standout point guard Yuuki Okubo and looked uncomfortable throughout the contest as the Scots never let the Yeomen back into the game in the second half. They shot a blistering 66.7 percent (34-of-51) from the floor, which included an 11-of-21 (52.4%) showing from beyond the arc. The sharp shooting also carried over to the free throw line where the Scots deposited 18 of the 22 freebies they hoisted.

Oberlin cashed in 26 of the 54 shots it took for a respectable 48.1 percent clip, but struggled from distance going 6-of-21 (28.6%). OC was also plagued by 15 turnovers that led to 28 Wooster points.

The result snapped a three-game winning streak Oberlin had heading into the game as the Yeomen fell back to 12-10 overall and 6-7 in the NCAC. Wooster moved to 14-8 and 10-3 in league play.

Oberlin will return home to take to the Philips Gym hardwood for the final time this season and will honor its senior class prior to tip-off on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. against the DePauw University Tigers.
