Granville, Ohio – Taking on their second nationally-recognized opponent, both in the North Coast, the Oberlin College men's basketball team saw 13 players score in their 97-56 loss to Denison (RV) on Wednesday night. The Yeomen move to 5-2 overall and 0-2 in NCAC action.
Adam Navarre and
Zach Bronson led the balanced offense, each accounting for eight points, while Navarre shot a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line. As a unit, the Yeomen shot 12-14 from the charity stripe, also helped by
Asaan Snipes-Rea who knocked down all four of his free throw attempts.
In addition to the balanced attack, 11 Yeomen brought down rebounds, led by Snipes-Rea with four.
Shea Laursen produced an efficient effort, collecting three rebounds and four points in less than ten minutes on the court. Rookie
Alasan Njie-Morgan and veteran
Will Bousquette III had the magic touch from behind the arc as the two combined for the only three-pointers in the game.
After a missed triple from Denison,
JJ Gray brought down the rebound to give Oberlin their first look on offense.
Zach Smith put the Yeomen on the board with a layup for the 2-0 lead. The struggles on the court began thereafter, leading to a pair of turnovers and missed opportunities over the next several minutes. The Big Red were nearly automatic from the field, shooting an impressing 62.9% in addition to 8-15 from behind the arc.
Looking to bounce back from the slow start,
Yuuki Okubo got the Crimson and Gold offense going before Smith and Navarre combined for back-to-back layups. Oberlin battled to cut into Denison's lead, but the Big Read seemed to have an answer everytime the Yeomen struck, maintining a double-digit advantage throughout the half. Although the defense held the home team to less than .500 shooting, it was Denison who prevailed in the conference matchup.
Oberlin returns home for their next conference game, hosting Wabash this Saturday, December 7 for a 1 p.m. tip-off.
