Thousand Oaks, California – Taking on #25 Cal Lutheran, the Oberlin College men's basketball team fell in a tight game against the Kingsmen on Sunday afternoon. Dropping 84-63, Oberlin steps back to 8-4 on the season ahead of conference-only play next week.
JJ Gray led the Yeomen with 17points and six rebounds, while
Milun Micanovic notched his second-straight double-double with 12 points and ten rebounds. The third-year center now has five-consecutive games with double-digits boards.
Yuuki Okubo finished with a well-balanced stat sheet, putting up 11 points, six assists, and five steals.
Adam Navarre and
Zach Bronson each added a pair of assists to the game, while Navarre put up nine points in the loss.
Oberlin's Okubo kicked off the scoring for the Yeomen with a jumper in the paint at the 19:38 mark. The Kingsmen quickly found their rhythm, scoring nine-straight points to extend their lead to 21-12. The Yeomen responded with a jumper from Gray and a layup from
Asaan Snipes-Rea, but that was as close as Oberlin would come to the Kingsmen in the first half.
Facing a 13-point deficit, the Crimson and Gold were slow to start their attack in the second half. A rebound from
Andrew Gannon set up a jumper for Gray, getting Oberlin on the board in the second period. Minutes later,
Rob Magner hit a triple from distance to cut the Kingsmen's lead down to 11.
Although struggling to keep up with the Cal Lutheran offense, Oberlin kept shooting, ultimately hitting back-to-back three-pointers from Gray and Navarre at the 2:51 mark. The home team held the hungry Oberlin offense at bay for the 84-63 victory.
The Yeomen return to the court when they come home to get back into conference action. Oberlin hosts Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday, January 4. The first home event of 2025 is set to begin at 2 p.m.
