Oberlin, Ohio – Capping off the home season, the Oberlin College volleyball team lost a three-set battle to Heidelberg on Tuesday night. Dropping the match 3-0 (12-25, 17-25, 24-26), the Yeowomen sink to 5-17 on the season.
Julia Hall and
Cami Sweet guided the offense, as both seniors tallied six kills each. The duo combined for five aces, while
Zeynep Kaya added two more.
Jillian Jendsen had a team-high 11 assists in the match, aided by
Genna Gauthier (5),
Iris Archibald (3), and Kaya (3).
Defensively
Natalie Dufour led the tem with a pair of block assists, while Sweet grabbed the only solo.
Josie Macdonald and Kaya also chimed in with a half block each. In addition to her serving duties, Archibald added to the defense with 16 digs to lead the team.
Falling in an early 6-1 hole, Oberlin's offense gained wind with back-to-back kills from Kaya. The momentum continued with a pair of kills from Sweet, capped by an ace from Hall to tie the score at seven all. The rally was short-lived, however, as the Student Princes responded with 12-1 to take a commanding 19-8 lead. It was little much that the Yeowomen could do to come back from the run, falling 25-12 in the first set.
Heidelberg's momentum carried over in the second set, which saw the visitors jump out 9-4 over Oberlin. A few attacking errors and a service ace from Kaya gave Oberlin a handful of points to compete against the Student Princes, but the Yeowomen still struggled to climb a 17-8 hill. Eventually falling 25-17 in the second set, Oberlin highlighted the late points with a 5-0 run that included kills from Kaya and an ace from Archibald.
Finding a rally in the final hour of the match, Oberlin jumped out to grab the first point of the third set off a kill from the Hall-Archibald connection. The two foes swapped a trio of points before the visitors committed a plethora of errors to give the Crimson and Gold a 7-3 lead. The Student Princes responded to reclaim a 9-8 lead, but Gauthier slammed it over the net to tie the game at 9-9. Dufour's timely attack put the Yeomen back on top, 10-9.
After stealing six-straight points from Oberlin, Heidelberg carried a stead lead to 22-17 before the Yeowomen struck next. Responded with five-straight points, the Crimson and Gold found themselves just one point shy of the lead. It was a Jendsen set to an
Evelyn Welton kill that tied the game at 23-23, just seconds before Hall notched a kill to the match again. Facing match point,
Oberlin struggled to settle their momentum and seal the set, committing a pair of critical offensive errors that lifted the Student Princes to a 25-23 victory in the third set.
The Crimson and Gold return to the court this weekend when they play their final matches of the regular season. On Saturday, November 9, Oberlin will play both Grove City and Carnegie Mellon at the CMU Tri-Match. Oberlin takes on Grove City first at 1 p.m., followed by Carnegie Mellon at 3 p.m.
