Oberlin, Ohio - The Oberlin College women's basketball team has been the model of consistency under head coach
Stephany Dunmyer who has led the Yeowomen to a combined 54 wins over the last three seasons.
Oberlin is coming off a 16-10 mark, which included a 7-7 finish in the North Coast Athletic Conference and fifth seed in the league tournament. However, the Yeowomen will look different this year, especially in the backcourt with the loss of all-conference performers
Alyson Jefferson and
Gina Lombard due to graduation.
"We have worked hard to establish a strong culture within our program, and while we lost some key players to graduation, we have a very talented, hard-working group who is ready to step up," Dunmyer said. "I am really excited to see how this group comes together and continues to grow and get better."
Fortunately, Oberlin still returns a plethora of talent across the floor, headlined by senior
Camille Zinaich. The 2022 NCAC Newcomer of the Year, Zinaich was an All-NCAC second-team selection last year as she averaged 13.7 points and 3.2 assists per game while finishing third in the NCAC with a team-best field goal percentage of .520 (129-248). The Boonsboro, Maryland, native averaged eight rebounds per game, scored in double figures in 18 games, and produced five doubles-doubles on the year while recording 33 steals and 23 blocked shots on the defensive end.
Sophomore
Krystal Montas, junior
Katherine Csiszar, and fellow senior
Kendal McCall join Zinaich in the frontcourt. Montas played in all 25 games as a rookie, making 11 starts, and leading the team with 52 blocks while finishing second on the squad with 5.6 boards per game. Csiszar is coming off the best season of her career, while McCall looks to build off a strong second half of the season last year. OC also gets some additional size with the return of 6-foot-3 Loganville, Georgia, native
Alira Allen.
"From Camille's ability to score and create to Krystal's game-changing defensive presence, we have great depth and versatility in our returning posts," Dunmyer noted. "This group has the ability to play with pace but also can battle and be physical when needed. Kendal, one of our captains, has done a tremendous job with her leadership role on and off the court."
Oberlin has plenty of capable options to fill the roles on the wings and in the backcourt. The tandem of junior co-captains
Ellie Pollock-Ballard and
Lily Najmulski combined for 71 3-pointers a season ago and made 36 starts. After missing most of last season due to injury, junior
Angela Kumler returns to the lineup with her length and ability to score in multiple ways. Before going down last year, she was averaging 8.2 points per game and was shooting at a 49.3 (36-of-73) percent clip, which included a 42.3 (11-of-26) mark from beyond the arc. The 6-footer from New Concord, Ohio, also registered 25 steals and 14 blocks over 12 games played.
The Yeowomen also have added backcourt depth in junior
Anora Lee, sophomore
Allison Bubar, and senior
Taylor Sanchez. Lee has seen action in 52 games over her first two seasons, averaging 18.4 minutes per contest while Bubar and Sanchez could both see expanded roles this year.
"This is a group of players who have been together for 2-3 seasons now and that chemistry shows in how they play," Dumyer added. "With players like Ellie, Lily, Angela, and Anora on the floor, we have a great mix of experience, skill, and intangibles that we're so excited to continue build on."
Oberlin also welcomed four first-years to the roster from three different states. Massachusetts natives Samanta Dormer and
Ananya Sivasubramaniam join Cold Spring, New York, product
Camilla McDaniel, and Miami, Florida, native
Gabby Pena in the class of 2028.
"Our first-year players are talented and eager to learn. They have brought joyful energy and a team-first competitive mindset. They are already impacting our program positively and helping to push our culture forward every day."
Oberlin will be battled tested early on with seven of its first eight games away from Philips Gym, including the season opener on Friday, November 8 at Adrian College. The Yeowomen, who will play just three home games before the holiday break, will take to the squirrel's nest hardwood for the first time on November 23 against Penn State Behrend. The conference slate will start on December 4 at Wooster.
Fans will be able to watch most games live online while all home games will be carried on the
Oberlin Sports Network app powered by HudlTV on any Roku, Amazon Fire, or Apple TV-enabled device.
