Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Oberlin Takes Nationally-Ranked Wooster to the Wire

Wooster, Ohio – Battling the No. 16 Wooster Fighting Scots to open North Coast action, the Oberlin College men's basketball team kept up with the conference's top team until the final minutes of action. Ultimately falling 92-80, the Yeomen drop their first game of the season, ending the win streak at five.  The Crimson and Gold move to 5-1 on the season and 0-1 in NCAC action.

Zach Smith led the charge for Oberlin with a career-best 27 points, tying a program record for most three-pointers in a game, shooting 7-of-11 from behind the arc. Senior guard Yuuki Okubo orchestrated the offense with a career-high 15 assists while adding eight points and six rebounds. JJ Gray contributed 15 points, six rebounds, in addition to going 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. Rob Magner also finished in double-digits with ten points.

The first half was a high-octane affair, with both teams trading blows. Smith caught fire early, hitting multiple threes to keep the Yeomen within striking distance. Okubo's pinpoint passing created open looks, and Oberlin's bench chipped in with 17 first-half points. Taking a shot from deep as the clock hit zero, Asaan Snipes-Rea brought the Yeomen within one, 45-44, heading into halftime.

In the second half, the Fighting Scots leveraged their size and depth, pulling away with a strong interior presence and second-chance opportunities. Ashton Price and Jamir Billings combined for 51 points to lead Wooster's offensive attack. Oberlin battled valiantly, with Smith continuing his hot shooting and Gray adding critical free throws, but the Scots' 28 points in the paint and 25 rebounds proved too much to overcome.

The Yeomen will look to bounce back when they travel south to face Denison (RV) on Wednesday, December 4. The night cap is set for 8 p.m.
