Oberlin, Ohio - The Oberlin College volleyball team earned its second straight sweep, knocking off the visiting Ohio Christian University Trailblazers 25-22, 25-17, 25-17, Tuesday night at Philips Gym.
The tandem of
Josie Macdonald and
Cami Sweet led the way with a combined 21 kills on the night. Sweet, who hit .421 in the win, also added a solo block and a block assist. Fellow senior
Julia Hall chipped in seven kills, three aces, and a career-high 17 digs, while rookie
Evelyn Welton dropped in four of Oberlin's 11 aces in the match.
Jillian Jendsen and
Genna Gauthier had the offense in system, delivering a combined 28 assists with 16 coming courtesy of the junior Jendsen who also contributed 12 digs.
Iris Archibald led the back row with 19 digs.
Oberlin jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the opening set and never relented the lead. However, the Trailblazers would fight back to within one, 12-11, at the midway point of the frame but a 9-3 Oberlin burst that was capped off by back-to-back aces from Hall created more than enough separation to pull away for the early match advantage.
The Yeowomen picked up right where they left off in the second set, quickly claiming a 5-0 cushion out of the gates, and were never threatened from there.
However, the final frame was nip-and-tuck throughout as it featured nine ties and four lead changes along the way. Oberlin was trailing 11-7 and later found itself still facing a four-point deficit at 16-12 before using its final timeout. However, the Yeowomen refound their form following the restart, ripping off six straight points that featured a pair of kills from Macdonald and Sweet to make it an 18-16 Oberlin advantage.
The Trailblazers wouldn't go away quietly, rallying back to tie the match at 18, 19, 20, and 22 before Oberlin was able to finish off the victory. A service error and an attack error had the Yeowomen just one point away and it was Welton who would ultimately deliver the match-clinching kill.
Oberlin out-hit Ohio Christian .168 to .084 and had an 11-6 edge in aces.
The Yeowomen will now prepare for a tough four-match road swing, starting on Sunday at Wittenberg. The first serve is set for 1 p.m.
