#14 Kenyon Steals Last Second Goal to Down Oberlin at Home

Oberlin, Ohio – Hosting a national powerhouse on Shults Field, the Oberlin College men's soccer team pulled out a historic performance before ultimately losing to the #14 Kenyon Owls on Wednesday night. Nathan Thompson played heroics for the Yeomen to even the match at 1-1, but a goal at the buzzer lifted the Owls over the Yeomen for a 2-1 final. The heartbreaking loss moves the Crimson and Gold to 5-10-2, and 1-5-1 in conference action.

Earning the start in cage, Grayson Benson racked up eight stops in one of hist best performances of his career. Thompson led the offense with the lone score for the Crimson and Gold, tallying his first goal of the season in the 88th minute on picture cross from Xander Francoeur.

The Yeomen played locked-down defense throughout the first half, shutting out the Owls from scoring. Oberlin remained off the scoreboard in exchange, fighting through seven Kenyon corners and just as many shots.

In the second half, the Crimson and Gold continued their defensive momentum to hold the visitors scoreless. Kenyon finally broke the drought with a low corner goal at the 71:59 mark. Oberlin responded ten minutes later when Francoeur raced downfield with the ball, crossing to Thompson who scored the equalizer.

Oberlin nearly tied in the 79th minute when Leo Pelizzari-Astle was left all alone on the near side post but a member of the Owls' backline came flying across to keep his attempt from going into the goal.

Coming down to the wire to hold the tie, Kenyon earned one final free kick from midfield with four seconds remaining. The Owls keeper, Jack Pedreschi, whipped the ball towards the back post, where Matt Nguyen passed across to Hayato Ishii for the game winning goal. Scoring as the clock hit zero, the Owls escape the upset with a 2-1 scoreline.

The Yeomen return to the pitch for their final match of the regular season this Saturday, November 2 when they host the Wabash Little Giants. Oberlin will celebrate their seniors prior to the 1 p.m. kickoff.
