Oberlin, Ohio – Celebrating their six soon-to-be graduates in the final game of the season, the Oberlin College men's soccer team dominated the visiting Little Giants on Saturday afternoon.
Xander Francoeur led the offense with a pair of goals as the Yeomen cruised to a 5-1 victory over Wabash.
Guiding the Yeomen to their highest scoring game of the season, Francoeur tallied a pair of goals, including his tenth of the season and 20
th of his career. Fellow senior
Toby Wells-Zimmerman chipped in a goal as well, in addition to an assist later in the game. The final two goals were shared between the next class of seniors,
Louis Gandelheid and
Nathan Thompson.
Vince Fortuna and
Grayson Benson split time in goal, with Fortuna earning the start in cage. Fortuna grabbed a pair of saves to clinch the win, while Benson made five stops to keep the Yeomen's goal advantage.
From the opening whistle, Oberlin came out strong, with Thompson netting the first goal just nine minutes in. Only two minutes later, Wells-Zimmerman doubled the lead off an assist from
Anthony Pacewicz and Thompson, setting the tone for an energetic first half.
Despite a response from Wabash's Jose Escalante on a penalty kick, Oberlin didn't back down. Francoeur scored back-to-back goals, with assists from Wells-Zimmerman and Pacewicz, extending Oberlin's lead to 4-1 before halftime. Oberlin's offense remained sharp throughout, showing remarkable teamwork and precision in front of the net.
Wabash's Alfredo Campos gave the Little Giants their best chance at cracking the Oberlin defense in the second half, taking a pair of shots on cage in the 62
nd minute. Benson dove to the lower right corner to make the initial save, but Campos collected the ball again and shot towards an empty goal where
Carlos Febles-Flores slid just in time to stop the ball from crossing the goal line.
Renewing their momentum off the sliding saving, Oberlin held the Little Giants scoreless before Gandelheid sealed the match with a late goal, assisted by
Enrique Porras Jr. and
Joel Beeson.
The spirited win on Senior Day allowed Oberlin to finish the season on a high note at 6-10-2 and a 2-5-1 record in conference action.
