Oberlin, Ohio – On a beautiful autumn evening, the Oberlin College men's soccer team snagged their first conference victory of the season over the Hiram Terriers. The midweek matchup saw a plethora of Yeomen score and an impressive performance by
Vince Fortuna to clinch the shutout victory. Oberlin improves to 1-4-0 in the NCAC, and 5-9-1 overall.
Oberlin wasted no time settling on offense, combining for four shots in the first ten minutes of action. The Yeomen finally snagged their first goal of the game when a flurry of passes into the box found the foot of
Anthony Pacewicz, who delivered the assist to
Toby Wells-Zimmerman. Notching his third goal of the season in the conference matchup, the fourth-year striker gave the Crimson and Gold a much-needed lead in the 30'.
Looking to extend their lead late in the half, a shot from
Nathan Thompson nearly did just that, only glancing off the post of the goal. With the lead heading into the halftime break, Oberlin dominated the time of possession, outshooting Hiram 6(3)-3(2).
Back on the pitch, the Crimson and Gold tested the Terriers early, putting two shots on cage right away. At the 62:37 mark, Thompson crossed the ball near the corner where he met Pacewicz for the quick touch and goal.
Up 2-0, Oberlin made it three when
Louis Gandelheid connected with
Leo Pelizzari-Astle for his first goal of the season. Rolling with momentum, Oberlin continued to challenge Hiram, as first-year standout
Walter Gomez-Torres dribbled the ball downfield before placing it right into the far corner of cage.
Oberlin held strong for the final minutes of the match, capping their third shutout victory and the most goals scored in a match this season.
Oberlin heads south for their final road test of the season when they travel to Wittenberg on Saturday, October 26. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
