Oberlin Drops Unlucky Test Against Ohio Wesleyan

Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's soccer team played one of their best games of the season, but an unlucky bounce in the final minutes of the match left the Yeomen on the wrong side of a 2-1 final. Dropping a close one against Ohio Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon, Oberlin sinks to 4-8-1 and 0-3 on the season.

Cage minding for the Yeomen was Vince Fortuna, who played an incredible 90 minutes highlighted by ten saves. Xander Francoeur scored the lone goal for the Yeomen; capitalizing on transition momentum in the first half.

As soon as the opening whistle gave way, Ohio Wesleyan pounced on the ball to test the Crimson and Gold defense. An early foul inside the goal box afforded OWU with their first goal-scoring opportunity of the match. Setting up to take the kick, Jaggar Brooker sent the ball into the lower left corner where Fortuna met the shot for the save

Minutes later, Francouer received the ball upfield from Nathan Thompson before sending a rocket into the top corner of the net. Oberlin dominated the game of possession through the rest of the half to take a 1-0 lead into the break.

Coming out of the half, the Yeomen continued to hold the Bishops scoreless behind a trio of saves for Fortuna at the 59'. OWU finally got on the board in the final ten minutes of the match when Alex Bucher capitalized on a rebound to tie the game at one apiece. Less than two minutes later, Just Carro sent a ball into the box from 35 yards out, where it hit a divot and bounced over Fortuna's head.

The Battling Bishops held onto their one-goal lead through the final eight minutes to secure the NCAC victory.

The Yeomen return to the road when they travel to Indiana to take on DePauw next Saturday, October 19, for a 5 p.m. kickoff.
