GREENCASTLE, IN – After a historic five-game winning streak, the Oberlin College men's basketball team dropped Saturday's matchup against the DePauw Tigers. A back-and-forth from start to finish, the Yeomen came up on the wrong side of a 92-87 scoreline. The team moves to 3-4 in the NCAC and 9-7 overall.
Oberlin will look to get back to their winning ways when they play host to Wooster on Wednesday, January 17. The Fighting Scots and the Yeomen tipoff at 8 p.m.
How It Happened
A go-to spark for the Oberlin offense, Will Bousquette III notched the first points for the Yeomen right from tipoff. The junior guard then stole the ball back from the Tigers, resulting in a jumper from JJ Gray. The hot start continued with back-to-back three-pointers from Robert Millard, just before Dimitrije Radusinovic knocked down a trey off a pass from Asaan Snipes-Rea.
Firing on all cylinders, the Crimson and Gold maintained a one-possession advantage over the Tigers, until falling behind at the 6:05 mark. Coming in clutch, Anastasis Spyroglou hit the team's sixth three-pointer of the half to equalize the game at 31-31. Radusinovic tipped the trey scale to seven. DePauw picked up the pace in the final minutes of action, pushing the score in their direction for a 46-42 lead at the half. Oberlin's offense shot 52% from the field, and an impressive 7-16 from the arch.
The Tigers had no trouble picking up where they left off and extended their lead to ten within the first two minutes of the third quarter. Oberlin settled into the half, and after consecutive turnovers from DePauw, the Crimson and Gold pulled back within one of the lead. Continuing to fight from behind, a jump shot from Spyroglou gave Oberlin a 70-69 advantage with 9:16 to play.
With the game heating up, the conference foes swapped points before tying the game up again at 84-84 with 1:52 remaining. The Yeomen celebrated a one-point lead after Gray hit both his free throws, but the advantage was short-lived as the Tigers bore down on offense to score the game-winning jumper with 11 seconds to go. A game that saw five Yeomen finish in double-digits for the first time this season, ended in a heartbreaking 92-87 loss.
