Volleyball Takes Two on Friday

Wooster, Ohio - The Oberlin College volleyball team recorded a pair of four-set victories at the NCAC-MIAA Challenge on the campus of the College of Wooster on Friday afternoon. 

The Yeowomen took down the Alma College Scots 25-20, 26-24, 20-25, 26-24 and then followed with a 22-25, 25-10, 25-15, 25-15 triumph over the Belles of St. Mary's (IN).

The Yeowomen offense was paced by Andrea Jones, who finished with 13 kills in the match while rookie Are'Anna Gill added 10. Defensively, four players reached double figures in digs, highlighted by Iris Archibald's 25, 15 from Zeynep Kaya, and 12 more from Jillian Jendsen. From the front row, Natalie Dufour contributed six blocks.

How It Happened

SET 1 | Oberlin opened up an early lead, winning the first set 25-20. Oberlin never trailed by more than five points and grabbed the advantage for good at 11-10 in a set that showcased four lead changes before the Yeowomen took over the lead. OC got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked four Alma attacks in the stanza.

SET 2 | After their win in the first set, Oberlin put themselves on the cusp of a sweep with a 26-24 victory in set number two. The Yeowomen persevered in a back-and-forth set to win in a stanza that featured seven lead changes and was tied 10 times. Neither team led by more than four points along the way. The Oberlin offense also got a boost from four aces in the stanza.

SET 3 | Oberlin saw its chance for a 3-0 win end when Alma took set three. OC came up short by the score of 25-20. Oberlin trailed by as many as six points as Alma grabbed the advantage for good at 17-16 in a set that was tied up five times before the Scots took over in the second half of the stanza.

SET 4 | Oberlin then responded to end the match with a 26-24 fourth-set victory. The Yeowomen survived a back-and-forth set to win in a stanza that featured four lead changes and was tied 12 times. Neither team was able to grab a lead larger than four points along the way.

St. Mary's Recap
Senior Lauren Sands ripped off 14 kills to lead the attack while finishing with a hitting percentage of .545. OC also got 18 digs from sophomore Iris Archibald along with five blocks from junior Cami Sweet to lead them defensively.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Yeowomen battled back from an eight-point 16-8 deficit, but Saint Mary's (IN) hung on to win the first set 25-22.

SET 2 | Oberlin fired back from a first-set loss to take the second set 25-10, evening the match at one set apiece. The Yeowomen took a 1-0 lead and never looked back in the set to earn the victory. Oberlin opened its biggest lead of the stanza, 15 points, to close out the set, collecting 15 kills along the way. As a team, Oberlin hit an impressive .367 over the course of the set.

SET 3 | Oberlin took a 2-1 match lead after defeating the Belles in the third set. OC grabbed went in front 4-3 and held the lead the rest of the way to win 25-15. Oberlin ended on a strong note, opening up its biggest lead of the stanza, 10 points, to finish off the set, collecting 15 kills in the process. The Oberlin offense also got a boost from three aces in the stanza.

SET 4 | Oberlin earned a match win with a 25-15 fourth-set victory, winning their third set in a row. The Yeowomen scored first and never trailed in the set to earn the victory.

Oberlin now sits at 4-1 on the young season and will be back in action next weekend as it hosts its own two-day invitational on Friday and Saturday. The Yeowomen's first match is set for 2 p.m on Friday against Defiance.
