Volleyball Opens Oberlin Invitational with Back-to-Back Sweeps

OBERLIN, OH - The Oberlin College volleyball team opened their home schedule with a pair of matches in the team's annual Oberlin Invitational on Friday afternoon. The Yeowomen picked up their first win against Defiance, taking down the Yellow Jackets in a three-set (25-16, 25-8, 25-11) thriller. After a short break, Oberlin picked up right where they left off, sweeping Pitt- Bradford 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, 25-12). The Yeowomen move to 6-1 on the season and a perfect 2-0 in the tournament.

Defiance Recap
The Crimson and Gold attack was firing on all cylinders as nine Yeowomen tallied kills in the match. Led by Cami Sweet 13 kills, the junior scored a team-high 16. 5 points. Lauren Sands and Natalie Dufour made their presence known with another six kills each. Taylor Gwynne's 31 assists catapulted Oberlin to a team hitting percentage of .421. The service game looked just as strong with an incredible 14 aces. Iris Archibald tallied five of the team's aces while bringing in another team-high 15 digs.

The defense mirrored the potency of the offense with 12 block assists. Sweet and Dufour accounted for half of the team's BAs with three each.

SET 1 | The Yeowomen grabbed control of the set-one lead at 3-2 and never looked back to win 25-16. Oberlin led by 11 points at 14-3 before closing out the set, collecting 15 kills in the process. got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked four Defiance attacks in the stanza.
SET 2 | Oberlin won set two 25-8 to swiftly grab a 2-0 lead. The Crimson and Gold scored first and never trailed in the set to earn the victory. Oberlin opened up as much as an 18-point lead at 22-4 before closing out the set. The Yeomen hit .500 over the course of the set. The Oberlin offense also got a boost from seven aces in the stanza.
SET 3 | The Crimson and Gold then capped the three-set sweep with a victory in set number three. The Yeowomen took control of the set early when the score was 3-2 and never looked back to win 25-11. Oberlin ended on a strong note, opening up its biggest lead of the stanza, 14 points, to close out the set. The Oberlin offense also got a boost from five aces in the stanza.

Gwynne and Makela Reid chimed in on the action with 28 and six assists, respectively. Gwynne led the team in their service game, notching six aces, tied for most in the senior's career.
