Inside the Series …
Saturday marks the first-ever meeting between Oberlin and Concordia … Oberlin is one of the longest running college football programs in the country, starting play all the way back in 1891 … Meanwhile, the Cougars have also been around for quite some time, celebrating their 100th anniversary this year with the program starting back in 1923.

Scouting the Cougars …
The Cougars are coming off back-to-back 3-7 seasons and lost their opener last week to Greenville University, 41-14 … CUC threw for just 175 yards, playing two different quarterbacks with the ability to run … Junior Troy Pratley was 9-of-16 for 160 yards and a score, while sophomore Jakob Redmond is the more dynamic runner of the two as he scampered for 34 yards and a TD on five carries … The Cougars used multiple personnel packages with 10 different players registering at least one rushing attempt last week, while seven players caught a pass … Sophomore Brandon Arredondo headlines the defense, recording 80 tackles as a rookie to lead the team while finishing sixth in the NACC … Junior linebacker Travon Thomas is coming off a season in which he earned NACC Second-Team laurels after posting 72 tackles and corralling three interceptions in 2022.

Last Time Out for the Yeomen …
For the third time in as many seasons, the Yeomen won the statistical battle against the Kalamazoo College Hornets, but finished on the wrong side of the scoreboard as Kalamazoo defeated Oberlin 42-10 … The offense racked up 449 yards, setting a school record with 100 plays ran in the game and doubled-up K'Zoo in time of possession at 40 minutes to 20 minutes … However, untimely mistakes prevented the Yeomen from cashing in more points as the Hornets took advantage of the miscues to pull away for the victory.

Getting Their Feet Wet  …
A total of 17 players made their collegiate debuts last week … The newcomers who had the most impact were NuNu Samuels on offense and Colten Danel on defense … Samuels rushed for a team-high 36 yards on 15 carries, while Danel led the defense with nine tackles … Other impressive showings from the newcomers included wide receiver Jordan Fishback who had 58 yards on three catches and running back Jamykle Benison who averaged 3.3 yards per carry.

Nye is the Guy …
After a preseason battle for the starting quarterback job, it was sophomore Drew Nye who emerged to take the reins of the offense and he was certainly impressive in week one … The Clinton, Connecticut, native threw for 335 yards, completing 33 of his 59 attempts, which is the third-most attempts in a game of any Oberlin quarterback in school history … Nye, who threw his first-career TD to classmate Solomon Brennan, added 34 yards rushing to finish with 369 yards of total offense, which is the ninth-highest mark in a game in program history.

Familiar Faces in New Places …
A handful of Oberlin returners have found themselves in different positions this season …After spending his first two years at quarterback, Evan Smith-Rooks made the transition to super back and led the team with six catches for 65 yards last week … Brennan, who played exclusively in secondary last year, now has a multi-faceted role on offense as a wide receiver and backup QB … Senior co-captain Jake Russell, also made his offensive debut last week … Nye went from wide receiver to QB while Luca Friedman moved from the front seven back to the secondary.
