Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Oberlin Draws with Wooster to Open Conference Action

OBERLIN, OH -Capping off an incredible Homecoming Weekend, the Oberlin College men's soccer team opened NCAC with a tie against the Wooster Fighting Scots on Saturday night. In the 2-2 draw, the Yeomen move to 2-3-4 and 0-0-1 in conference play.

How it Happened

Oberlin got the game rolling after a quiet start to the match, as Nathan Thompson took the first shot just wide of the net. After several minutes of fast paced back-and-forth action, Toby Wells-Zimmerman put the Yeomen on top with a well-placed shot from the near side. Looking for the equalizer, Wooster nearly found it off a corner kick. A header right at the doorstep of the Crimson and Gold goal, Colvin Iorio stood tall to make the save and keep the Fighting Scots off the board.

After a scoreless first half, the Fighting Scots scored back-to-back goals in the 69' and 71', respectively.  The Yeomen looked to find their second goal almost immediately, but Nasim Amer's shot fell just short and was saved by the Wooster keeper. With just minutes left in the match, Oberlin came up with the equalizer after Amer connected with Xander Francoeur for the second-half score. Although momentum on the side of the Crimson and Gold, it was too little too late for either team as the two NCAC foes settled for a draw.

The Crimson and Gold return to the pitch for their next conference matchup against the Denison Big Red on Wednesday, October 4 at 7 p.m.

Game Notes

  • Thompson led the offense with five shots, while Wells-Zimmerman led the added three on target.
  • Iorio collected five saves for the Yeomen out of seven total Fighting Scots shots.
  • Francoeur recorded his first goal of the season on the 87' equalizer.
