Football Falls to DePauw on Homecoming

Oberlin, Ohio - The Oberlin College football team treated a large homecoming crowd to an exciting first quarter but the visiting DePauw University Tigers took control from the second quarter on en route to earning a 66-7 win over the Yeomen on Saturday afternoon at the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex.

Sophomore quarterback Drew Nye completed 50 percent of his passes, finishing 16-of-32 for 155 yards to go along with one touchdown and one interception. Unfortunately, the Yeomen were never able to get the run game going as Oberlin had just 30 yards rushing - half of which came courtesy of Greg Lane who had 15 yards on three carries.

Rookie running back Jamykle Benison was featured heavily in the offense, drawing 15 touches with nine rushes and a team-high six receptions.

After the Tigers scored on their first possession, Oberlin evened the score as Nye and freshman Cameron Burke hooked up on a long-range strike for the second straight week as Burke blew right by the Tigers' secondary for a 60-yard catch-and-run touchdown to cap off a 5-play, 75-yard drive.

Unfortunately, the score woke up the Tigers who went on to score six second-quarter touchdowns with four of them coming on just one play. Jaylon Smith accounted for three of those one-play scores, hauling in TD receptions of 27, 90, and 33 yards before adding his fourth score of the game early in the third quarter from two yards out.

The Yeomen continued to fight to the end, but couldn't get much going as the Tigers scored 17 second-half points while running their record to 5-0 and 3-0 in the NCAC.

Brandon Hall and Luca Friedman were all over the field defensively, as Hall racked up a career-high 15 tackles, while Freidman matched a career-best with 13 stops.

The Yeomen are idle next week but will be back in action at home on Saturday, October 14 against Wittenberg. The opening kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
