Football Drowned by Wittenberg

Oberlin, Ohio - The visiting Wittenberg University Tigers scored early and often on a wet and rainy Saturday afternoon at the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex as they knocked off the Oberlin College football team 72-7.

The Tigers scored a touchdown on their first seven possessions of the game to take a 49-0 lead into the halftime intermission.

Sophomore quarterback Drew Nye had a rough day passing in the wet conditions, connecting on just 12 of 35 attempts for 126 yards. He was picked off twice but did throw his eighth TD of the year in the fourth quarter.

Rookie running back Jamykle Benison was a bright spot on offense as he picked up 56 yards on 13 carries for an average of 4.3 yards per rush.

With the game never in doubt, Oberlin would orchestrate a scoring drive early in the fourth quarter as Nye found Evan Smith-Rooks in the corner of the end zone from 15 yards out to cap off a 10-play, 55-march that took 4:11 off the clock. It marked the first career receiving touchdown for Smith-Rooks.

Unfortunately, Wittenberg would return to ensuing onside kick attempt 45 yards for a touchdown as Tyler VanMeter grabbed the big hop and raced down the far sideline to cap the game's scoring.

The Tigers out-gained the Yeomen 512 to 159 and had 29 first downs compared to just 10 for Oberlin.

Hunter Green led the defense with 13 tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss, while Colten Danel also added 12 stops in the loss.

Oberlin will be back in action next Saturday when it makes the short trek over to Hiram College for a 1 p.m. conference clash.
