Richmond, IN - The Oberlin College field hockey team closed out its season-opening road trip to Indiana, falling 3-1 to Concordia University of Wisconsin on the campus Earlham College.
The first 30 minutes of action was evenly contested with both sides finding the back of the net. Oberlin earned an early penalty corner and cashed in just 3:14 into the game. Elly Scheer injected it off the spot up to Sara Fields who sent it right back to Scheer for the goal, marking the sophomore's second score of her career.
The Falcons got back to even in the ninth minute as Bella Vandeloecht was able to sneak one past Oberlin first-year keeper Lelia Burki. Fellow rookie
Ava Leone nearly gave Oberlin a 2-1 advantage at the end of the first quarter but her shot was turned away by Halli Schneiderwendt.
After neither side found much offense in the second quarter, the Falcons would quickly take the lead following the restart as Leah Mouganis finished off a corner with the help of Sarita Arsham assist.
The Falcons would add a key insurance goal early in the fourth quarter as Caitlyn Weitzel found the back of the cage.
After two first-quarter shots, Oberlin had just one more attempt the rest of the game.
CUW put five of its 12 shots on goal and had a 10-2 advantage in penalty corners. Burki made one save, while senior Abbie Patchen also recorded a defensive save in the setback.
The Yeowomen return home to open NCAC play on Wedesday, September 13 against Kenyon College.
