Field Hockey Comes Up Short in Conference Opener

OBERLIN, OH - Getting their conference season started under the lights, the Oberlin College field hockey team fell 1-0 in a close battle against Kenyon on Wednesday night. The Crimson and Gold defense stood tall in the rivalry match, holding the Owls to their lowest point total in over ten years. The last time Kenyon scored one or fewer goals against Oberlin came in 2012 when the Yeowomen took down the Owls 1-0 in Gambier. The loss moves Oberlin to an overall record of 0-3 and 0-1 in the NCAC.

Oberlin takes a short break before hitting the road on Saturday, September 16, at 6 p.m. to take on Washington and Jefferson for their second conference matchup.

How it Happened

Right from the horn, the Crimson and Gold locked in on their rival, holding Kenyon without a shot on goal through the first nine minutes of the match. Second-year keeper Janny McCormick and the Oberlin defense held the Owls scoreless through the first quarter, only giving way in the final minutes of the half. Coming off a penalty corner in the 29', Kenyon connected with the back of the net to notch the first goal of the game.

Down 1-0 after the first half, Oberlin battled to find the equalizer throughout the third period. The offense crossed the midfield mark several times but was unable to create momentum with the ball in the visitor's half. Heading into the final period of the game, Kenyon came out firing on all cylinders, ready to add an insurance goal to their tally. A shot just minutes into the quarter proved fruitless for the Owls after Elly Scheer made a defensive save to keep Kenyon at bay. The Yeowomen continued to fend off their NCAC foes but came up on the wrong end of the 1-0 scoreline.

Game Notes

  • McCormick made seven saves in the match, while clocking a complete 60 minutes.
  • Scheer tallied her second defensive save of the year, moving her career total to four.
  • The Crimson and Gold defense blocked seven shots in conference matchup.
