Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Settles for a Draw Against Defiance

Oberlin, Ohio - The Oberlin College men's soccer team controlled the run of play throughout the 90-minute affair but still needed a last-second goal to earn a 2-2 draw against the visiting Defiance College Yellow Jackets on Saturday night at Fred Shults Field.

An early tally in the 13th minute from Riley Hensley had the Yeomen playing from behind for the bulk of the first half and they would ultimately head into the intermission trailing, 1-nil.

However, first-year John Wirtz would level the fixture just eight minutes into the second half as he found himself in a fortuitous spot to finish off a deflected shot in front of the net for his first-career goal.

The Yeomen continued to pressure the Yellow Jackets' rearguard, firing off 20 second-half shots but had nothing to show for it as Defiance keeper Orry Killam stood tall throughout the night to finish with 15 saves.

After a plethora of opportunities went by the wayside for the Yeomen, it was the Yellow Jackets who nearly escaped town with a victory as Noah Svanberg sent in a piercing strike from near left wing from 25-yards out with under a minute left to play.

Thankfully, the Yeomen quickly found a rebuttal to equalize the match as Toby Wells-Zimmerman's initial shot attempt was turned away by Killam but Louis Gandelheid was there to clean up the rebound for his third goal of the season with just 34 seconds remaining in the match.

Oberlin finished with a 29-10 shot advantage, which included an 18-6 difference in shots on goal. The Yeomen also triggered 10 corners compared to Defiance's two.

Colvin Iorio made three first-half saves before giving way to Louis Berger in the second half as he added one more stop for the Yeomen.

Oberlin is back in action on Wednesday night at home against Capital University. First touch is set for 7 p.m.
