WASHINGTON, PA – The Oberlin College field hockey team battled, but ultimately fell to Washington & Jefferson on the road Saturday night. Dropping the match 4-0, Oberlin falls to 0-4 and 0-2 in the NCAC.
The Crimson and Gold continue their road-streak next Tuesday, September 19 when they head down to Denison for a 4:30 p.m. match.
How it Happened
Off the Presidents' first shot, a cross that carried into the goalie, Washington & Jefferson got on the board with a 1-0 advantage. The Yeowomen struggled to recover from the early goal and gave way to another just over ten minutes into the game. Oberlin looked to score the equalizer with back-to-back penalty corners in the final seconds of the quarter, but the Yeowomen came up empty after a thriller of an opening period.
The defense tightened up in the second quarter, allowing just two shots on the cage. The first was stopped by
Elly Scheer before the final shot was blocked by the defense.
The second half of the match got underway with consecutive saves from
Janny McCormick in goal, but the aggressive attack of W&J found its way onto the board again with a tap-in off a rebounded shot. The Presidents made it 4-0 just minutes into the final period of play when Ella Phillips earned a penalty stroke against Oberlin.
The Crimson and Gold rallied to get on their offensive end, led by Scheer who earned a penalty corner in the 56'. Off the corner, first-year
Clare Kammeier took the team's first shot on cage that had to be saved by the keeper. Fighting to the end,
Ava Leone found her stick aimed at goal as well, but her shot came up saved by the W&J goalie for a 4-0 shutout.
Game Notes
- McCormick made six saves in the match while playing the full 60 minutes.
- Scheer tallied her third defensive save of the year, moving her career total to five.
