Delaware, OH - The Oberlin College baseball team split a doubleheader at Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday, winning game one 6-4 before dropping the nightcap 5-4.
Oberlin trailed 2-1 going into the seventh inning of the opener, but rallied for four runs in the seventh and added a big insurance run in the eighth to hold on for the win.
A
Vince Dolcemaschio sacrifice fly in the first inning got the Yeomen on the board and it remained a 1-0 Yeomen advantage all the way until the fifth inning as the Bishops scratched out a run in the home half of the inning before taking the lead in the sixth thanks to an Oberlin error.
The Yeomen bats would come to life with two outs in the seventh as
Max Cairo roped an RBI double down the left field line to tie it and then he would come in to score to put the Yeomen out in front for good on
Jacob Thompson's single to left.
After
Jake Blozy singled, it was sophomore
Ethan Hurwitz who came up clutch, poking a two-run double into the gap in left center to score Blozy and Thompson. Oberlin's final run of the game would come an inning later as
Chris Wolfe raced home on a passed ball to make it a 6-2 Yeomen lead.
However, the Bishops would battle to the bitter end, plating a pair in the ninth to trim the gap down just two but senior
Alexander Norris came out of the bullpen to record the final out of the game, leaving the bases loaded to preserve the win for the Yeomen.
Jay Aganya got the start on the bump, working 5.1 innings, surrendering three hits and four walks to go along with two strikeouts and two unearned runs.
Max Wassarman gave up two earned runs on four hits, two walks and two hit batters over 3.1 innings before Norris was able to bail him out of trouble in the ninth.
Oberlin out-hit OWU 11-7 with Hurwitz leading the way with three, while Thompson, Blozy and
Yianni Gardner each finished with two.
Roles were reversed in the backend of the twinbill as the Bishops scored all five of their runs from the sixth inning on to steal away a potential sweep for the Yeomen.
It was all zeros across the board for both sides through the first four innings until Thompson put the Yeomen out in front with an RBI double to left center that scored Cairo in the fifth.
Unfortunately, the Bishops would soar ahead in the sixth on one swing of the bat as Edrick Padilla belted a grand slam over the wall in right center to give OWU the lead.
Oberlin would trim the lead in half in the seventh on a first-and-third double steal play but the Bishops would get that run right back in the bottom of the frame on a sac fly by Colton Moone.
The Yeomen would continue to fight till the final out, scoring a pair in the ninth. After the first three hitters of the inning all reached base, Doclemaschio worked a bases-loaded walk and
Max Anastasio followed with a sacrifice fly to shrink the deficit down to one, but Jason Monos was able to retire the next two Oberlin hitters, leaving two men stranded to secure his first save of the year.
Ty Weatherspoon (2-2) struckout six over 5.1 innings, scattering seven hits and three walks but he was ultimately undone by Moone's big fly.
Luigi Smarro gave up two hits and one run over 2.2 innings of relief.
Blozy went 3-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored to lead the offense, while Thompson, Hurwitz and Wolfe each finished with two hits.
The Yeomen will cap off the 2023 season tomorrow at home against Denison. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
