Oberlin, Ohio - Five members of the Oberlin College men's track and field and cross country program earned College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Honors ®, the organization announced on Wednesday.
Representing Oberlin was
Jerry Achtermann,
Sam Fechner,
Niels Vanderloo,
Walter Moak, and
Matthew Walton.
To be eligible for the award, one must have a cumulative grade point average 3.50, reach at least sophomore status academically, and participate in a minimum of 50 percent of the team's meets.
A junior from Annandale, Virgina, Achtermann is a double major in composition and cinema studies who was a part of the North Coast Athletic Conference championship cross country team and the most successful men's track and field season in program history.
A sophomore economics major from Hamburg, Germany, Fechner scored in four different events at the NCAC Outdoor Championships, which included an All-NCAC showing in the 4x400 relay where he would later be a part of the school record unit that clocked in at 3:15.48.
A first-team All-NCAC selection in cross country with a sixth-place finish, Vanderloo also earned All-NCAC honors in the 10,000 meters outdoors with a third-place effort of 33:08.03. The New York City native recently graduated with degrees in mathematics and physics.
An NCAA national qualifier in cross country, Moak had a breakout sophomore season, earning five all-conference awards which included an NCAC title in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The musical studies major from Charlottesville, Virginia also earned Great Lakes all-region laurels in cross country.
Walton capped off his career with career All-NCAC second-team honors in cross country. The performance and computer science double major graduated in the fall as a three-time All-NCAC honoree.
