Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

No. 22 Denison Tops Oberlin

Oberlin, Ohio - The 22nd-ranked Big Red of Denison outlasted the Oberlin College women's tennis team 7-2 on Saturday afternoon at the John W. Heisman Field House.

The two foes would split the two contested doubles matches with Oberlin's No. 2 tandem of Dina Nouaime and Lydia Zafeiri knocking off Caroline Lopez and Monique Brual by an 8-5 count. The top battle pitted a pair of regionally-ranked foes up against each other as the No. 5 ranked Central Region pairing of Sydney Cianciola and Sarah Robertson snuck by Oberlin's No. 13 duo of Marta Laska and Anna Pastore, 8-6.

In singles play Nouaime made short work of Brual at No. 3 as the senior celebrated her senior day with an easy 6-0, 6-1 victory.

The three remaining singles matches were all closely contested but unfortunately they all went the way of the Big Red.

At No. 2 Pastore and Robertson went swing for swing but the Big Red senior, who is ranked 17th in the region, ultimately outlasted the Oberlin sophomore 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 to earn the win.

In the fourth position Zafeiri and Peyton Oda also had a tight match but the Oberlin rookie finished on the wrong end of a 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 scoreline.

The top flight pitted Cianciola and Laska up against each other with each player ranking 13th and 23rd in the region, respectively. The Denison ace won the opening set 6-4 but Laska bounced back with a 6-2 triumph in the second before falling 6-3 in the decisive third set.

The loss halted Oberlin's win streak at three matches, dropping them back to 8-7 overall and 3-2 in the NCAC. Denison has now won five in a row to move to 14-4 and 5-0 in league play.

Oberlin returns to the courts on Thursday afternoon as the nationally 12th-ranked Spartans of Case Western come to town for a 5 p.m. crosstown clash.
