Oberlin, Ohio - The Oberlin College Track and Field competed at home this weekend against the College of Wooster and Lourdes University. Out in the sun, both teams saw a lot of success.
Leading off with the long jump event, third year pentathlete
Hayden Hill finished first for our women's team, jumping 14-06.00 (4.42m). Hill also continued on to get first in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:10:34. On the men's side, Oberlin's infamous jumping trio of
Jake Jarvis,
Zack Lee and
Namu Makatiani finished second, third, and fourth.
The triple jump pit saw many new faces today for Oberlin. First-year
Anna Fritz debuted with a 1st place jump of 33-05.25 (10.19m), and teammate
Nina Hoyt came in a close second with a jump of 32-01.50 (9.79m). Men's triple jump had third year
Jon Dromlewicz (37-05.25 (11.94m)) and second year
Luke Yates (35-11.50 (10.96m)) taking second and third, both of who were also tripling for the first time.
Over in the throws, junior
Abby Cannon finished first in discus (127-10 (38.97m)) and hammer (153-00 (46.63m)), and senior
Iyanna Lewis placed second in hammer ( 152-09 (46.56m)) right behind her.
Men's javelin swept, starting with Makatiani in first with a throw of 139-00 (42.37m), followed by
Theo Haviland in second throwing 138-10 (42.32m), then
Dhylan MacLaren in third throwing 132-07 (40.42m), and finally
Isaiah Schuham-Anders in fourth rounding it out with a throw of 121-08 (37.09m).
On to running events, the men's 4x100 meter relay consisting of Jarvis,
Reese Hyatt,
Cole Fuller and
Sam Fechner finished with a time of 42.91. With a dramatic diving hand off from third leg Fuller to anchor leg Fechner, they finished first over both other relays. Next on the track was the men's and women's 1500, in which Oberlin had three top five finishers in both races. First on the men's side was
Walter Moak crossing the line in 4:02:20, which placed him first in the NCAC.
Liam Newman followed in third with a time of 4:04:26, and Danny Markey finished in fourth at 4:5:06. Oberlin's women's team held second through fourth places in the 1500m race, with
Margo Lee finishing first at 5:04:57, followed by
Eliza Medearis who ran a 5:20:91, and finally
Amber Borofsky in third with a time of 5:30:55.
Mentioned for the third time, Makataiani also had his debut in the 100m men's high hurdles today, and finished first in 16.09. In the 100m women's hurdles, senior
Chilly Wallace also finished first in her first hurdles race of the outdoor season, with a time of 15.57, while leading the whole race.
The men's team had success in the open 100m dash, with 4x100 runners Fechner and Hyatt finishing first and second in 11.18 and 11.29. With their impressive finishes, both qualified for the conference championship. Hyatt had success in the open 200m as well, finishing fourth behind teammates
Simon Lowe (23.10) and
Kambi Obioha (22.47). The women's 200m also had three top-five finishes, led by Wallace with a time of 26.67. She was followed by freshman
Ryley Steggall finishing third in 27.67 and fellow freshman
Clara Smith finishing fourth with a collegiate personal record of 27.81.
In the 800m dash, Oberlin finished first in both the men's and the women's races, with Moak gaining another first place honor and clocking in at 1:59:69. Second year
Sage Reddish finished first on the women's side with a time of 2:23:99.
Concluding the meet, Oberlin had an 'A' team and 'B' team in both the men's and women's 4x400m relay, with the 'A' teams winning both. The winning men's 'A' team consisted of Lowe, Fuller,
Sam Fechner, and Obioha, who finished in 3:18:03. The winning women's 'A' team was made up of junior
Myranda Montoye, sophomore
Camila Ciembroniewicz, Smith, and Reddish.
The track and field squad now await the announcement of which select members will compete in the All-Ohio Meet at Ohio Wesleyan next Saturday, April 15.
