Oberlin, Ohio – After celebrating their nine seniors prior to the game, the Oberlin College men's lacrosse team dominated DePauw for a 21-9 victory on Saturday afternoon. The combined efforts of
Kiernan Stone and
Ryan Blasberg on both sides of the ball led the Yeomen as they improve to 7-5 on the season and 3-2 in conference play.
Leading the defensive charge, fifth-year senior Stone set a pair of program records including the single-season and career bests for caused turnovers. After tallying a pair in the game, Stone now sits at 88 career caused turnovers and 34 on the season. Stone breaks his own best single season record from last year (32) and resets the career records from Matthew Basile's '16 86. The veteran long pole brought in another ten ground balls while fellow senior
JT Starcke collected six.
On the attack, Blasberg tallied a career-best seven goals and one assist for eight points. This is the fourth time the junior has scored six or more goals in a game this season.
Jacob Starcke connected with the back of net on four of his six shots while rookie
Solomon Brennan chipped in a trio of scores.
First-year attacker J. Starcke got the Crimson and Gold rolling with three-straight goals before the midway mark. Blasberg and
Sam Ryu added their tallies to the score as the Yeomen came out of the first quarter with a 5-1 lead.
DePauw rallied early in the second quarter to cut the Yeomen's lead to two at 6-4. After a faceoff win by Stone, the senior ran down field and assisted Brennan for team's seventh goal. The Tigers added another score in the following play, but it was all Oberlin from there as the high-scoring trio of Blasberg, J. Starcke, and
Michael Muldoon combined for a four-goal run to end the half.
Up by six to start the third quarter, a goal from senior
Max Cha made it 12-5 before the Tigers rallied for a response. At the 13:40 mark,
Jonas Taylor-Lillquist forced a turnover on the defense that led to the beginning of a six-goal run for the Yeomen. Muldoon kicked off the high-octane attack before the duo of Brennan and Blasberg led the drive.
Drew Bornstein extended Oberlin's lead to 19-7 as the final quarter got underway. The Tigers battled for possession but the Crimson and Gold defense proved to be too much for the visitors as they struggled to build a comeback.
Jack Duffy found Ryu for a score just minutes before
Gavin Girard moved the ball downfield to set up a goal for
Dylan Hendrick. The tandem tallied the last Oberlin goals of the game as they Yeomen earned the 21-9 victory.
The win marks the team's third-straight win scoring 20 or more points.
