Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Bishops Use Second-Half Defense to Defeat Yeomen

Delaware, Ohio - The Oberlin College men's lacrosse team led 6-5 at the half, but the Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops shutout the Yeomen in the second half en route to earning a 10-6 win on their home soil.

Jacob Starcke and Ryan Blasberg each deposited two goals for the Yeomen in the loss, while senior Keirnan Stone led the defensive effort with six ground balls.

OWU netted the game's first two goals before Starcke got the Yeomen on the board at the 8:49 mark. Rookie Solomon Brennan later finished off a Blasberg feed, but OWU would also tack on two more first-quarter goals to claim a 4-2 advantage after 15 minutes of play.

It was all Oberlin in the second quarter as they out-scored the Bishops 4-1 in the frame to carry a one-goal lead into the intermission. Michael Muldoon got the rally going, cashing in a man-up goal, finishing off a pass from Niko Maheras

After Dennis Van Der Wal pushed the OWU margin back out to two at 5-3, the Yeomen closed the session with three straight scores with Blasberg bookending a finish from Starcke that he assisted on.

However, the Bishops would adjust their defense in the second half to keep Oberlin off the board while scoring five times over the final 30 minutes of play to run their record to 9-4 overall and 4-1 in the NCAC.

OWU goalie Nathan Geroge made nine of his 14 saves in the second half, while Oberlin counterpart Jake Pillsbury was also impressive as he notched his seventh double-digit save performance of the season with 12 denials.

The Bishops finished with a slight 43-40 edge in shots, including a 22-20 margin in shots on goal. OWU, which secured 14 of the game's 20 face-offs, also won the ground ball battle 32-26. However, the Bishops also turned it over 22 times compared to just 15 for the Yeomen.

The result dropped Oberlin back to 7-6 overall and 3-3 in the NCAC.

The Yeomen will close out the home portion of their schedule on Tuesday night against Kenyon College. The opening face-off is set for 7 p.m.
