Yeomen Pound the Terriers Behind Record-Setting Performances

Oberlin, OH – The Oberlin College men's lacrosse team bounced back at home after overpowering Hiram on Saturday evening. Through wind and rain, Jacob Starcke led the Yeomen in the 26-4 pounding of the Terriers for their first conference win this season. The first-year attacker scored nine goals in the game, shattering his career-high and the single-game goals record of seven. Snapping three-straight losses, Oberlin improves to 5-4 on the season.

With an assist in tow, Starcke also tied the record for most points in a game at ten, set by Will Jaffee almost exactly 18 years ago in 2005. Ten different Yeomen scored in the game highlighted by Drew Bornstein and Leander Herman who each tallied three goals to earn their first career hat tricks. Sam Ryu notched four goals while Michael Muldoon raked in the assists at five for a total of seven points.

On the defensive end, Kiernan Stone checked in at 16 ground balls to tie for third-best of all time. The fifth-year senior also had three caused turnovers to lead the team. Jake Pillsbury, Joe Barocas, and Justin Bader all earned time in cage, with the trio combining for four saves. Michael Dinkel added another ten ground balls in the game after going 14-16 at the faceoff. Nathan Hall also had an impressive showing at the circle, going 11-16 on the day while tallying five ground balls.

Although jumping out of the gates with an early goal from Starcke off the stick of Bornstein, the Yeomen were held to just four goals in the first quarter. Hiram got on the scoreboard with 1:05 remaining in the opening period before Oberlin began a 10-0 run that lasted into the second half.

After five minutes of action in period two, Starcke and Ryu scored back-back-to-back goals before Max Cha continued the run at the 3:49 mark. Up 8-1, the Crimson and Gold tacked on another three goals from three different players in the last 1:25 before halftime.

The Yeomen came out of the break with an 11-1 lead that extended one more at 11:13 in the third quarter. Ryu and Starcke added another pair of goals before Hiram's Noah Pilgram cut the run with the Terriers' second goal. The NCAC foes swapped scores again as the third period closed on an 18-3 Yeomen lead.

Oberlin never let up in the final quarter as the team brought in its reserves to close out the game. Bornstein scored the first two points before Solomon Brennan got in on the action with 12:16 remaining. Jack Duffy connected with net to give OC a 20-point lead just a minute before Dylan Hendrick scored off Duffy's pass for a man-up goal. The last goal came off the stick of Leander Hermann who cut around the crease to beat his defender to the back of the net. Both Herman and Hendrick scored their first career goals in the final quarter. The 26-4 final saw the most goals scored by Oberlin this season.

The Yeomen hit the road for their next game against Wabash next Saturday, April 8. The Crimson and Gold have never lost to the Little Giants and will try to continue that streak beginning at 4pm. A live stream will be available here and live stats available here.
