Oberlin, Ohio - The Oberlin College men's lacrosse team battled the College of Wooster Fighting Scots to an 11-7 defeat to open North Coast Athletic Conference competition on Saturday afternoon.
Fighting Scots jumped out to a two-goal lead before the Oberlin offense found its rhythm.
Michael Muldoon and
Niko Maheras connected to get the Yeomen on the board, but the Scots struck back before the first quarter expired.
Trailing 3-1, the Yeomen knotted the match at 3-3.
Jacob Starcke grabbed his 26th score of the year and Muldoon capitalized on a precise pass from
Max Cha. Starcke claimed his second of the day before the Scots rattled off three unanswered goals to close the first half.
The Scots held a 7-4 lead at the break, and the advantage was too much for the Yeomen to overturn. Halfway through the third frame, the Yeomen pulled within one as Stracke completed his hat-trick and Maharas bested Wooster goalie Jake Chandler for his first of the afternoon.
Wooster increased the advantage to 9-6 before
Solomon Brennan collected his 16th goal of the campaign. The Scots found the back of the Oberlin net twice more before the end of regulation, dropping the Yeomen back to .500, at 4-4 overall.
In goal, first-year
Jake Pillsbury finished with 17 stops, elevating his season total to 100 with a .595 save percentage.
The Scots remain unbeaten at 10-0 overall, (1-0 NCAC), one of the last remaining undefeated teams in Division III.
Oberlin men's lacrosse returns to action on Saturday, April 1, when they host the Terriers of Hiram College. Opening faceoff is slated for at 4 p.m.
