Baseball Suffers Walk-Off Loss to No. 4 Baldwin Wallace

Berea, Ohio – The Oberlin College baseball team gave the fourth-ranked Baldwin Wallace University Yellow Jackets all they could handle but, in the end, it was BW who prevailed 12-11 on Thursday afternoon at Fisher Field.

Oberlin carried an 11-9 lead into the eighth inning and should have left the bottom of the frame with a two-run cushion intact, but a critical two-out error by the Yeomen allowed two runs to score to tie the game at 11-11.

Oberlin would load the bases in the top part of the ninth but did not score to set the table for Mark Mohnickey's walk-off solo homer in the ninth to send the Yeomen home heartbroken.

The Yeomen plated a pair in the first inning, but BW quickly reset the game in the home half of the inning as Luke Vonderhaar lifted a two-run home run over the wall in left field to even the affair.

The Yeomen trailed 5-2 after three innings but would chip away at the deficit with a single tally in the fourth before erupting for four runs in the fifth to claim a 7-5 advantage. A sac fly from Max Anastasio got the rally rolling and Jacob Thompson followed with an RBI single through the left side before sophomore Ethan Hurwitz belted his first-career home run to the gap in left center.

Both teams would trade single tallies in the sixth with the Yeomen run coming courtesy of a single back up the box by Ryan Kaestle that plated Jake Freed.

The Yeomen would tack on two more runs in the top of the seventh to increase their lead out to four at 11-7. A crucial Yellow Jackets miscue extended the inning to allow one run to score and then senior John Schooner would make them pay with a RBI single up the middle to send Max Cairo home before Freed raced in on a wild pitch.

Unfortunately, Oberlin couldn't make the four-run lead stand up as former Yeoman Alexis Castillo roped a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh before the costly error in the eighth that tied the game and led to heartbreak in the ninth.

Both teams finished with 12 hits with Hurwitz leading the way with three for the Yeomen while Yianni Gardner and Thompson each added a pair.

Vince Dolcemaschio worked the front five innings on the bump, allowing six runs on eight hits, two walks, and two hit batters to accompany his four strikeouts over five innings of work in the no-decision. Max Wassarman, Alexander Norris, and Luigi Smarro also worked out of the Yeomen bullpen, conceding a combined six runs but just three were earned.

The Yeomen (1-3) will open their spring break trip on Sunday afternoon against Caltech in Tucson, Arizona.
