New Concord, OH – In a game dictated by the Crimson and Gold defense, the Oberlin College men's lacrosse team took down Muskingum 14-3 on the road.
Kiernan Stone collected a career-high 11 ground balls in the win, guiding the Yeomen to their third-straight victory and a 4-1 record.
The fifth-year, veteran long pole forced five turnovers by the Muskies while both
Ryan Blasberg and
Michael Muldoon aided the defensive efforts with seven and five ground balls, respectively. Blasberg also paced the Oberlin offense with six goals and an assist, notching his second-straight game with six goals.
Jacob Starcke added another four goals and two assists in the winning effort.
The dominant defense of the Yeomen set the tone of the game early after rookie
David Belisle forced a turnover on the face-off to give Oberlin the first true possession of the game. The caused turnover from Belisle turned immediately into a goal as
Max Cha found Starcke for a 1-0 lead. Blasberg connected with the back of the net minutes later before the defense caused another pair of turnovers allowing Blasberg to score again.
Oberlin made it a 4-0 game after
Hal Nathan won the ensuing faceoff for quick pass down to Blasberg who connected with
Sam Ryu for the goal. With a confident lead, the Yeomen continued to stave off the Muskie attack forcing back-to-back turnovers followed by consecutive saves from
Jake Pillsbury. Putting Oberlin on the board in the second quarter was Starcke after a handful of attempts by the Crimson and Gold attack. The first-year Yeomen scored again just before the half as Oberlin commanded a 7-0 lead at the break.
Nathan won the half's opening face-off followed by a Blasberg goal to start the third quarter. After almost 32 minutes of lockdown defense, Oberlin gave up their first goal to the Muskingum attack as the scored moved to 7-1. The two teams exchanged the next pair of goals before
Solomon Brennan finally got in on the action, scoring off a pass from Cha. In the final seconds of the quarter, Blasberg struck again to notch his fifth goal of the day and give Oberlin a 10-2 lead.
The final quarter opened just how the previous ended, with a Blasberg goal at the 12:55 mark. Both sides of Oberlin's field continued their dominant play while Starcke, Brennan, and
Niko Maheras combined for the final goals of the game and secured a 14-3 victory.
The Yeomen bring the competition home for their next game against Illinois Wesleyan on Tuesday, March 14. The game is set to start at 4pm with a live stream available
