Adrian, OH – The rookie recruiting class lifted the Oberlin College men's lacrosse team over Adrian in a sunny matchup on Wednesday evening. The first-years tallied ten goals on their way to the 15-7 victory. The Yeomen improve to 2-1 on the season
The freshman athletes led the way for Oberlin today as
Jacob Starcke exploded on the scene, tallying six goals on just seven shots on goal. This is the rookie's third-straight game with three or more goals. Fellow first-year
Solomon Brennan earned his first career hat trick with a trio of goals with an assist to go along. Earning the start in cage was
Jake Pillsbury, who made 12 saves and a ground ball. Veteran long pole defenders
Kiernan Stone and
JT Starcke held down the defense combining for 14 groundballs and three takeaways.
Almost as soon as the game got underway Oberlin's
Ryan Blasberg committed a penalty, putting the Yeomen in a man-down situation. The defense locked down through the penalty minute and held the Bulldogs off the scoreboard. It wasn't until the 7:11 mark when
Sam Ryu found the back of the net to get the scoring going. Brennan drove up the middle just a minute later to extend Oberlin's lead to two. The Yeomen scored twice more for a 4-2 advantage heading into the second quarter.
Breaking another slow start for the Yeomen,
Max Cha right after
JT Starcke caused a turnover by the Bulldogs. The Crimson and Gold offense got rolling on the back of J. Starcke in the next 1:29, as the rookie added three-straight goals to Oberlin's total. Blasberg then got in on the action with his first goal of the day as the team went to halftime up 9-3.
The fast-paced scoring continued into the second half with Brennan and J. Starcke combining for a trio of goals in the first three minutes. The Bulldogs responded with a pair of their own goals to pull within seven, but
Michael Muldoon cut the short run off a pass from Brennan to keep Oberlin's healthy lead. Adrian scored just once more before the whistle for a 13-6 score to start the final quarter.
Brennan notched his third goal of the day and his first career hat trick midway through the fourth quarter right before
Jack Duffy scored his first collegiate goal. The Bulldogs responded with a goal, but Oberlin held off the home team for a 15-7 road victory.
The Yeomen continue their away matchups next Wednesday, March 8 against Hope College. The game will be played on neutral turf at the University of Detroit Mercy in Detroit, Michigan.
