Oberlin, OH – Despite a seven-goal comeback to tie the lead, the Oberlin College men's lacrosse team fell 16-13 to Albion on Friday night. Fifth-year
Michael Muldoon posted an impressive five goals in the loss as the Yeomen move to 1-1 on the season.
The fifth-year from New Jersey notched a new career high in points as well as tied his current best in goals. Muldoon led the Yeomen offense with five goals and two assists, while
Jacob Starcke chimed in with his second-straight hat trick.
Albion struck first but a pass from
Ryan Blasberg to
Sam Ryu got the Yeomen on the board and in the game. The Brits continued to hound the Crimson and Gold throughout the opening quarter, but not before Muldoon and
Niko Maheras added goals to keep Oberlin in the game.
Down 8-3 at the start of the second quarter, the Yeomen gave up another pair of goals to Albion before Ryan Polack and Co. called a timeout to make quick adjustments and send
Jake Pillsbury in at goal. On the ensuing face-off,
JT Starcke forced a turnover as Oberlin cleared the ball up for Muldoon to score his second goal of the game. Off that momentum,
Max Cha and Muldoon tacked on another pair of goals to cut the lead to five. Muldoon scored one last goal before the half to head to the locker rooms down 12-7.
The third quarter was all Oberlin as the aggressive Crimson and Gold offense scored four goals in just over a minute. Starting with first-year
Solomon Brennan, J. Starcke, Maheras, and Muldoon helped push Oberlin within one goal of the Brits. A man-up possession for Oberlin gave way to J. Starcke's second goal and the equalizer at the end of the quarter.
Oberlin's momentum continued into the start of the final period as J. Starcke earned his hat trick and gave the Yeomen the 13-12 lead. The run from the Crimson and Gold ended there as Albion held off the hungry Yeomen for the remainder of the game to earn a 16-13 victory.
The Yeomen pick their sticks up and play the first of a three-game road test next Wednesday, March 1. Oberlin will take on the Bulldogs of Adrian with the opening faceoff set for 3pm.
