Oberlin, Ohio- The Oberlin College men's basketball team celebrated their three seniors,
Chris Allen Jr.,
Dorde Otasevic, and
Cole Otley, on Saturday afternoon before they took on the DePauw Tigers. In a high-scoring matchup, the Yeomen ultimately fell 88-85 in overtime. The squad moves to 7-16 overall and 3-11 in conference action.
Anastasis Spyroglou led the scoring efforts in career-high fashion with 22 points in addition to seven rebounds. Otasevic followed close behind with 19 points and 13 rebounds to tally his 12th double-double of the season. The senior added another six blocks in the game; a career-best for Otasevic. Also finishing double-digits were
Asaan Snipes-Rea with a career-best 14 points and
Dimitrije Radusinovic with 11 points.
Yuuki Okubo brought in an impressive seven assists in his gameday efforts.
After falling behind early,
Will Bousquette III got the team moving with a three-pointer at the 15:57 mark. Oberlin picked up the pace with another trey from Spyroglou before Allen put in a layup to cut the lead to three. DePauw responded with a 13-2 to take a 30-16 point lead over Oberlin with 6:54 play in the half. The Yeomen kicked it into high gear over the final minutes, responding with nine unanswered points before taking a lead with a Bousquette III shot from behind the arch. Up 36-35 with 1:53 to go, the Crimson and Gold added another pair of baskets to pull ahead 40-37 at the half.
Otasevic kept the ball rolling into the second half, knocking down a three-pointer and jumper in the opening pair of possessions for the Yeomen. The two teams kept the game even until Spyroglou hit another three-pointer that turned into an 18-5 for the Crimson and Gold.
Up 70-54 at the 6:15 mark, the Tigers began mounting their comeback, putting up ten answered points to bring the lead within reach. A long three at the 1:08 mark cut the lead to two before Otasevic responded with three of his own to extend Oberlin's lead back to five. No backing down, DePauw added another three to the scoreboard for a two-point with 34 seconds remaining before putting in a layup in the final seconds, sending the game into overtime.
As overtime got underway, the Tigers struck first to move up 81-79. Spyroglou responded with a jumper of his own to tie the game back up in the next possession. Spyrglou added another jumper a couple of minutes later before DePauw capitalized on a foul to retake the lead for the final time and for the 88-85.
The Crimson and Gold cap off their season at home next Wednesday, February 15 when they host bitter rival, Kenyon. The Yeomen get the second game in a double-header series with the women's team and will play at 3pm. A live stream will be available
