Ada, Ohio - The Oberlin College men's basketball team trailed 67-60 with two minutes to go but held the Ohio Northern University Polar Bears scoreless the rest of the way and closed out the game with an 8-0 run to heist a 68-67 road win on Tuesday night.
A
Yuuki Okubo corner three made trimmed the ONU lead down to four with 1:43 to go and after a couple of stops it was Okubo who slashed through the defense to make it a one point game with 29 ticks left.
After the Polar Bears clanked a pair of free throws it was rookie
JJ Gray who cashed in the go-ahead bucket with 7.6 seconds left as he worked his way through the lane and got a turn-around floater to go down.
The Polars still had life, however, and got a great look to potentially win it as Carson Conley was left all alone for a wing 3-point attempt but thankfully it was too strong and
Andrew Gannon corralled the rebound to secure the win.
Senior
Asaan Snipes-Rea led the Yeomen offense with a season-high 13 points off the bench while
Anastasis Spyroglou and Okubo added 10 points each. Gannon,
Milun Micanovic, and
Robert Millard all finished with nine points in the triumph.
The Yeomen trailed 31-20 with less than five minutes to go in the first half but would close the session with a 14-3 burst to claim a 34-33 halftime lead. The run featured two triple-hits from Millard and four points from Snipes-Rea.
ONU would regain control, claiming a 54-46 lead with under nine minutes to go in the second half. A long-range connection from Snipes-Rea shrunk the Polar Bear cushion down to 62-60 with 3:26 still to expire but a mini 5-0 ONU spurt pushed the lead back out to seven before the Yeomen orchestrated the closing stretch to steal away the victory.
Oberlin shot 50.9 percent (28-of-55) from the floor and finished with a 44-34 advantage in points in the paint.
The Yeomen are back in action on Saturday at Defiance University with tip-time set for 3 p.m.
