Field Hockey Drops Non-Conference Match at Home

OBERLIN, OH – Capping off a busy weekend, the Oberlin College field hockey team hosted the Wooster Fighting Scots for a non-conference home match on Sunday afternoon. The Crimson and Gold looked strong through the first quarter, but a handful of well-placed shots led to a 4-0 loss for the Yeowomen. The defeat on Bailey Field moves Oberlin to 1-9-0 (1-5-0).

Oberlin returns on the field when they travel for their second match against Wooster for conference points, next Saturday, October 14.

How it Happened

Oberlin looked to be in high spirits off the whistle, moving the ball to their attacking half first. The Yeowomen were unable to create any shots from the possession as Wooster defended the onslaught and regrouped the ball to the other end of the field.  An early shot from the Fighting Scots led to a defensive save for Meaghan Kramer.

A slew of shots came up empty in the first quarter for Wooster, where Oberlin seemed to have the edge with a defensive strategy. The scoreless game broke open in the first shot of the second period, as Wooster's Lizzie Hardy capitalized on a pass from Maddie Peek. The Fighting Scots added to their lead seven minutes later before Oberlin settled Wooster's momentum.

Leila Burki took on the Crimson and Gold keeping job at the half, but the Wooster attack continued to splurge, adding another pair of high-quality scores. The final quarter looked better for the Yeowomen, as they moved the ball into their attacking zone more but couldn't come up with any shots. Oberlin battled to the final second, but Wooster came up with the 4-0 win.

Game Notes
  • Kramer and Elly Scheer combined for three defensive saves in the match, as Kramer leading the way with two.
  • Janny McCormick tallied three saves and Burki tacked on five more as the duo split halves in cage.
