Field Hockey’s Defensive Prowess Limits OWU in NCAC Loss

OBERLIN, OH – Taking on the reigning NCAC Champions, the Oberlin College field hockey team produced a near-perfect defensive game against Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon. The Crimson and Gold ultimately fell 3-0 to the Battling Bishops, while moving to 1-8 and 1-5 in conference play.

Oberlin has a quick turnaround for their next match, when they host Wooster tomorrow, Sunday, October 8, at 12p.m.

How it Happened

Coming into the match with 40 goals on the season, the OWU offense was stifled by the Crimson and Gold. The sturdy defense, led by second-year keeper, Janny McCormick, stood tall against the Bishops. Oberlin recorded five saves and three blocks after facing nine penalty corners in the opening period.

The consistent shutdowns kept coming from Oberlin in a second quarter that saw 14 penalty corners for OWU. The Yeowomen managed to get the ball on their attacking half where they earned a penalty corner of their own in the 28'. Elly Scheer took the lead on the corner, but the Crimson and Gold were unable to create a shot off the opportunity.

After holding OWU scoreless in the first half, Oberlin conceded their first goal after committing a foul in the critical scoring zone. Ohio Wesleyan's Allie Crawford stepped up to the stripe for the team's penalty stroke. With a hard shot to the left side of the cage, the Battling Bishops scored their first goal of the match.

The dominance on defense continued for Oberlin, but the OWU attack finally found its footing and added another two points before the final whistle. Oberlin battled through a slew of attacks but ultimately fell to the high-octane offense on Bailey Field.

Game Notes
  • The Oberlin defense faced 38 penalty corners in the match while defending all but two.
  • Abbie Patchen recorded the sole defensive save in the match, bringing her season total to three.
  • In an incredible performance, McCormick recorded a career-high 19 saves in the match.
