OBERLIN, OH – Hosting their annual Breast Cancer Awareness game, the Oberlin College field hockey team proved victorious 1-0 in penalty strokes against Transylvania. After a grueling 80 minutes of scoreless action, senior
Abbie Patchen scored the lone penalty stroke as the Crimson and Gold move to 2-11 on the season and 2-7 in conference action.
Oberlin takes the field one last time when they host Allegheny for an NCAC matchup and Senior Day on Saturday, October 28, at 4 p.m.
How it Happened
The Pioneers took the opening shot, but mainstay
Janny McCormick came up with the early save. Transylvania controlled possession in the first quarter but was unable to shoot past the Oberlin backline and came up scoreless at the end of the first.
The second quarter looked similar to the first, with the Pioneers controlling the pace of play and the attack. McCormick and Co. held the visitors off the board behind a trio of saves and a pair of blocked shots.
Coming out of the half, the Yeowomen looked refreshed and energized as they earned a penalty corner to start the quarter. After missing their first opportunity on the attack, the team earned another corner where
Elly Scheer passed the ball into the arch, where she found
Ava Leone for a shot. Blocked in front of the goal line, the ball trickled out for another Crimson and Gold corner.
Ruby Schreiber led the offense this time, passing into Scheer, who sent the ball high of the net and out of play. One last corner came for the Yeowomen in the third quarter, where Scheer connected with
Bella Tilford for another blocked shot.
Heading into the final quarter of regulation with momentum on their side, Oberlin locked in on defense to hold the 0-0 draw and head to overtime.
Playing 7v7 in OT, Oberlin and Transylvania split possession as they battled up and down the field. Neither team converted any shots, but McCormick accounted for four saves while the backline tallied three blocks.
Heading to penalty strokes to determine a winner, McCormick took to the cage for the first shot. Facing Sidney Aldrige, McCormick saved the ball off her foot to prevent the Pioneers' point. Patchen stepped up for Oberlin's first shot, where she shot around the goalie into the right side of the cage. Up 1-0, McCormick made the next save before Schreiber was saved on her shot as well. McCormick forced the next three Transylvania shots wide, while Scheer and Tilford's shots were missed wide and were saved. Winning the penalty stroke battle 1-0, Oberlin takes their second victory of the season and prepares for a tough Senior Day matchup next weekend.
