Oberlin Succumbs to Tigers on Wednesday Afternoon

OBERLIN, OH - On a sunny afternoon in Knowlton, the Oberlin College field hockey team hosted the Wittenberg Tigers for an NCAC matchup. The midweek affair saw the Tigers leave with a 2-0 win as the Crimson and Gold falls to 1-11 and 1-7 in conference action.

Oberlin returns on the field this weekend as they play host to a juicy matchup with the Transylvania Pioneers. The match is slated for Sunday, October 22 at 12 p.m.

How it Happened

In a game that was set to be a heavy defensive fight, the Crimson and Gold defense showed up and showed out, shutting out Wittenberg through the first period. Only conceding the first goal at the 19:21 mark of the second period, the Yeowomen looked in high spirits headed into the middle half of the match.

Down 1-0, Oberlin moved the ball downfield to their attacking half with speed, settling outside the arch. Dee Pegues took a clean shot at cage before the ball trickled off for a penalty corner. At the helm of the play, Elly Scheer launched the ball into the arch, where Ruby Schreiber got a piece of it for another Crimson and Gold shot. Unable to connect with the back of the cage, Oberlin remained scoreless, headed into the half.

The defense continued to lock in and shut down the visitors in the third period, highlighted by a defensive save from Scheer at the 42'. The Tigers scored another off the ricochet of Scheer's save, moving to a comfortable 2-0 lead.

Scheer made another defensive save to start the final period, but the heavy defense was not enough to counteract the Wittenberg attack as Oberlin fell 2-0 in the match.

Game Notes
  • Oberlin tallied a pair of shots on goal in the match, coming off the sticks of Schreiber and Pegues.
  • Scheer added two defensive saves in the match, moving her season total to nine, to share the top spot on the NCAC leader board.
  • Janny McCormick tallied nine saves, cracking 100 saves on the season.
