Field Hockey Comes Up Short Against Allegheny

MEADVILLE, PA – Finishing off a long run on the road, the Oberlin College field hockey team traveled to Allegheny College for an NCAC matchup on Sunday afternoon. The Crimson and Gold battled the high-powered Gators, but Allegheny proved too much as they defeated Oberlin 2-0. The loss moves Oberlin back to 1-7 and 1-5 in conference action.

How it Happened

The Crimson and Gold backline came out strong against the Gators, with Elly Scheer and Meaghan Kramer recording defensive saves in back-to-back shots. It took a penalty stroke for the Gators to get on the board. Allegheny's Emily Jackson sent the ball to the far-left side of the net, past Oberlin Janny McCormick.

Down 1-0 after 15 minutes of action, Oberlin battled through shot after shot from Allegheny, patiently waiting to make their attack. After McCormick made another save midway through the second quarter, the Yeowomen moved the ball onto their offensive end, where they earned a penalty corner. Off a pass from Scheer, Bella Tilford took a well-placed shot on goal that nearly slipped past the Gators goalie. Oberlin could not capitalize on their momentum as the two NCAC teams went into halftime.

The second half got off to a similar start as the first, but the Crimson and Gold looked stronger on the defense, making a pair of blocks and a pair of saves. As the final quarter got underway, Allegheny extended their league off a shot from an early penalty corner. Although the initial shot was saved by McCormick, the ball ricocheted right into the Gators' stick and into the back of the net. Oberlin couldn't come back from the deficit and ultimately fell to Allegheny.

The Crimson and Gold return to the field for their first home game since early September, when they play host to Ohio Wesleyan. The conference matchup will occur on Saturday, October 1, at 12 p.m.

Game Notes
  • McCormick made nine saves in the match while playing the full 60 minutes.
  • Scheer tallied her fifth defensive save of the year, moving her career total to nine.
