Oberlin, Ohio - The visiting Wittenberg University Tigers cashed in 18 3-pointers en route to earning a commanding 85-47 win over the Oberlin College men's basketball team on Saturday afternoon at Philips Gym.
Wittenberg came into the contest averaging just 27.5 percent (66-of-240) from beyond the arc but it was a much different story this afternoon as the Tigers connected on eight of their first 10 triple-tries in the opening half on their way to an 18-of-28 showing from distance for a 64.3 percent success rate.
Dorde Otasevic racked up another double-double for the Yeomen as he recorded 11 points and 11 rebounds in the loss, while
Anastasis Spyroglou added 11 tallies and six boards. Freshman
Zach Smith chipped in a career-high seven points in 11 minutes off the bench.
Wittenberg jumped on Oberlin from the onset, opening up a 17-4 lead seven minutes into the game. The Tigers' advantage would swell to as many as 17 in the first half but the Yeomen finally settled in and worked their way back into the game.
Dimitrije Radusinovic would follow his own miss to shrink the gap down to 12, 35-23, with 2:36 left in the frame and a long-range connection from Otasevic later had the Yeomen to within nine as that ultimately proved to be the halftime deficit at 37-28.
Unfortunately, the Tigers came out firing following the restart - using a 10-2 burst over the first 3:18 of the second half to extend their lead out to 47-30. It would only get worse from there as a Jerry Saunders Jr. triple-hit with 10:55 left to play ballooned the lead all the way out to 30, 67-37, to leave no doubt in the final outcome.
For how good Wittenberg shot the basketball, Oberlin was the exact opposite as the Yeomen had their second-worst shooting performance of the season at 28.1 percent (18-of-64), which included a 5-of-28 showing from distance to tie a season low with a 17.9 percent success rate.
Wittenberg finished 28-of-58 (48.3%) from the floor and was 11-of-13 (84.6%) from the charity stripe.
The result ran the Tigers record to 6-7 overall and 2-3 in the NCAC while the Yeomen fell back to 4-10 and are still in search of their first league win at 0-5.
Oberlin's next opportunity to earn that elusive NCAC victory will come on Wednesday night at DePauw University. Tip-time is set for 6 p.m.
