Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's basketball team was 2.2 seconds away from knocking off 2022 NCAA Final Four participant Wabash, but Vinny Buccilla hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from just inside half court to force overtime and propel the Little Giants to an 86-82 victory.
Oberlin trailed 64-59 with just under four minutes left in regulation but a personal 5-0 run by
Dimitrije Radusinovic evened the score at 64-64 before a corner triple-hit from
Anastasis Spyroglou put the Yeomen out in front with 85 ticks left to expire.
In the closing moments with the Little Giants trailing by one, Spyroglou would corral a miss by Edreece Redmind and be sent to the line with just 2.2 seconds to go. He would deposit both charity tosses to setup the heroic game-tying shot from Buccilla.
The Yeomen headed into the extra session shell-shocked as the Little Giants quickly opened up a five-point lead before a long-range strike from
Dorde Otasevic trimmed the gap down to 74-72.
Wabash would later increase the lead out to six with 38 seconds left but a big answer from beyond arc by
Will Bousquette III made it just a one possession game. After a pair of Little Giant free throws, Radusinovic would connect from distance to make it 82-80 with 23 seconds left to play but Wabash would finish off the victory four clutch free throws to leave the Yeomen heartbroken.
Radusinovic led the way with a game-high 25 points off the bench, dialing in five of six triple-tries along the way. Spyroglou added 15 points, while Otasevic chipped in 11 to accompany his team-high eight rebounds.
Wabash led 17-6 nine minutes into first half, but the Yeomen would settle in, authoring an 18-4 run to grab a 24-21 lead at the 6:48 mark. After going up by as many as four, the Yeomen would take a slim 35-34 cushion at the intermission.
It was a seesaw affair throughout the second half as no more than five points separated the two foes throughout the 20-minute stanza with eight lead changes and six ties taking place in the session.
The loss dropped the Yeomen back to 5-13 overall and 1-8 in the NCAC while Wabash moved to 14-5 and 7-2 in league play.
